Radhika Devi found a Poway Adult School brochure in a local library and made a life-changing decision for herself—to enroll.

For many adults, including Devi, the thought of returning to school and attending classes is intimidating and daunting. “I am overcoming my fear, which is the biggest obstacle,” she says. “I am becoming stronger.”

Devi is definitely taking advantage of what Poway Adult School offers. She is enrolled in several programs: ESL (English as a Second Language), IELCE (Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education), HSE (High School Equivalency), and is participating in the schools’ newest program, NEDP (National External Diploma Program). “The NEDP is designed for working people who want to continue their education,” she explains.

In fact, this is one of the things she likes best about Poway. “(This program) saves me time. I can learn wherever I am and that is convenient,” she says. Through Poway Adult School career services, she got a job and works as a retail associate at a big chain store. For her, the course flexibility helps manage her time and keeps her organized while working. She will earn her HSE diploma next year.

“I get great help from my instructors and counselors when I am in need,” she says, adding it has been a great start for her and she has seen many positive changes within herself.

Devi says despite her initial fear of returning to school, she enjoys being a student and taking classes for credit and non-credit at Poway Adult School. Once she earns her HSE diploma, she plans to continue to take classes at Poway that interest her, as well as focus on improving her English skills and contemplating her future career path.

Poway Adult School is one of almost 300 adult schools in California that are operated by K-12 school districts.
